Article categorization Abstract: The most researches are interested in the impact of corruption on the macroeconomic indicators (impact of corruption on the growth of GDP, employment, investments…). This study analyses the influences of changes (according to the authors the most important) macroeconomic indicators on the index of perception of corruption (perception of corruption in the public sector) in the case of states in the euro area (EU18) and also the influence of those indicators on the perception of corruption in the former communist countries, now as well members of the EU18. In the first part there is a short theoretical survey of definitions (corruption, index of corruption, impact of corruption on economy, as well as the results of some already existent researches into the influence of corruption on economy. In the second research part of this study there is the description of research methodology, data used in empirical research and the analysis (panel analysis) of those. The main purpose of this research is to check the hypothesis, that some changes of some macroeconomic indicators impact on the index of perception of corruption, so by changing macroeconomic indicators changes the index of perception of corruption as well (if the economic situation gets worse, also rises the perception of corruption and the other way round). Corruption: what it is, how it affects us and ways to fight it (English eBook for free)
Brazil Publishing, 2020
Fernando M Forattini
This book aims to address the concept of corruption and the fight against it through different perspectives that normally, mainly in Brazilian publications, do not talk to each other. It is a book that was created after I attended the renowned Transparency International School on Integrity (TISI) for young leaders, in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 2019 and met incredible people from around the world, all engaged in the anti-corruption fight and democracy strengthening. Thus, the aim of this book was to bring as much variety as possible to the ways of thinking about the effects of corruption and how to fight it in different countries, aiming that the reader can carry out the necessary critical comparisons to comprehend how corruption can be thought of as a global problem, but as one that often presents unique characteristics in different parts of the world and sectors of the State (public and private). Since this book was aimed mainly at the Brazilian public, being myself from this country, I was lucky to have also the contribution of Brazilian professors, researchers, and civil society actors. This is a very rich book in terms of analyzed materials, with precious analyzes on the most varied topics within the spectrum of corruption and different ways of combating it, being essential for beginners and initiates in the study of these themes.

Corruption, Causes and Consequences
Arthur Somda
Corruption is a constant in the society and occurs in all civilizations; however, it has only been in the past 20 years that this phenomenon has begun being seriously explored. It has many different shapes as well as many various effects, both on the economy and the society at large. Among the most common causes of corruption are the political and economic environment, professional ethics and morality and, of course, habits, customs, tradition and demography. Its effects on the economy (and also on the wider society) are well researched, yet still not completely. Corruption thus inhibits economic growth and affects business operations, employment and investments. It also reduces tax revenue and the effectiveness of various financial assistance programs. The wider society is influenced by a high degree of corruption in terms of lowering of trust in the law and the rule of law, education and consequently the quality of life (access to infrastructure, health care). There also does not exist an unambiguous answer as to how to deal with corruption. Something that works in one country or in one region will not necessarily be successful in another. This chapter tries to answer at least a few questions about corruption and the causes for it, its consequences and how to deal with it successfully.

Contemporary Economic Research of Corruption
Marko Danon
In this paper, we focus on the economic research of corruption. In the first part, we define cor ruption, types of corruption, its factors and ways to measure it. This section brings together various definitions by notable authors of this domain, such as Begovic, Tanzi, Mauro or Lambsdorff. Before moving to the second section, we are presenting definitions, typologies and factors already researched by acclaimed authors. In the second part, we focus on the channels by which corruption transmits its effects through the economy. This section consists of two major sub-parts, the first one in which we take part in a vivid scientific discussion with the ‘’apologists’’ of corruption, i.e. with those economists who underline positive roles of corruption. In the second sub-part of the second section, as a logic continuation of the previous sub-part, we are listing three important consequences of rampant corruption in one economy: consequences to economic growth, foreign direct investments an...

Corruption: Drivers, Modes and Consequences
Corruption - New Insights [Working Title]
Douglas Matorera
Corruption has become ubiquitous in both the private and public sectors of rich and poor countries across the globe. It occurs in various modes and always causes human suffering, particularly on the most innocent poor and vulnerable, the same humans who have neither the means nor resources to resist or escape. The chapter investigates corruption, where and how it happens, its drivers, causes, and strategies used to conceal it when and where it happens. It looks at the growing movement of anti-corruption activism and the factors key to the success of this movement. The factors steering the anti-corruption drive are knowledge, confidence, solutions and intolerance to corruption. Literature makes some distinction between petty and grand corruption. While corruption is seen as either petite or grand, there are two factors that make corruption indistinguishably concerning: systematisation and the multiplier effect. What may look like petty corruption will in the long run have huge reperc...

Diagnostic surveys of corruption in Romania
Phyllis Dininio
This surveys provide information on both actual experiences with corruption and on perceptions of the level of corruption. The patterns of corruption as perceived by households, enterprises, and public officials will be explored in this Section, and the patterns of actual experiences in the next. Even though perceptions of the level of corruption may be different from the reality, an understanding of these perceptions is still important since perceptions form the basis for decision-making. The survey results show that corruption is perceived by the public to be widespread. About two-thirds of the Romanian public believes that all or most officials are corrupt. Public officials reported lower perceived levels of corruption, although still high: 44 percent reported that all or most officials are engaged in corruption. While the perception of widespread corruption is clear, it is also clear that many people believe that corruption has achieved a state of normalcy. Half of households re...

Analysis of Modern Factors Influencing the Development of Anti-Corruption Activities of the State
Kateryna Kateryna
For several years in a row, Ukraine has been on the path of active democratic transformations due to a significant number of complex political, economic, environmental, and regulatory changes. Most of the transformations are due to the unwillingness of civil society to put up with situations that hinder the gradual development of all spheres of activity. Unfortunately, the leading positions are occupied by problems related to corruption in the public sector, which is one of the inhibiting factors in the implementation of state programs, reforms, and innovations. Their influence reduces the level of public confidence in the government, as well as contributes to the deterioration of the country's position at the level of international cooperation. Such actions lead to the development of crisis phenomena in sociopolitical and economic activities, reduces the level of national security and social protection of citizens. The presence of crisis phenomena leads to the need to make chan...

CHAPTER 3 3.0 IMPACT OF CORRUPTION ON THE NATION'S ECONOMY
basiru abdulahi
From OHCHR's experience, corruption negatively impact the enjoyment of all human rights –civil, political, economic, social and cultural, as well as the right to development, which underscores the indivisible and interdependent nature of human rights. The impact on the realization of human rights depends on the level of pervasiveness, the different forms and levels of corruption. Corruption can affect human rights as an obstacle to their realization in general and as a violation of human rights in specific cases. Corruption in the public and private spheres and its proceeds are not confined within national borders, nor is its impact on human rights. It typically diverts funds from state budgets that should be dedicated to the advancement of human rights. It therefore undermines a State's human rights obligation to maximize available resources for the progressive realization of rights recognized in article 2 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Corruption undermines the fairness of institutions and processes and distorts policies and priorities. As a result, corruption damages the legitimacy of regimes leading to a loss of public support and trust for state and government institutions. Corruption impact on the ability of the State to protect and fulfills its human rights obligations, and to deliver relevant services, including a functioning judiciary, law enforcement, health, education, and social services. In countries where corruption pervades governments and legal systems, law enforcement legal reform and the fair administration of justice are impeded by corrupt politicians, judges, lawyers, prosecutors, police officers, investigators and auditors. Corruption in the rule of law system weakens the very accountability structures which are responsible for protecting human rights and contributes to a culture of impunity. Since illegal

Corruption and control: a corruption reduction approach
Journal of Financial Crime, 2012
Adam Graycar
PurposeCorruption is a significant financial crime which is estimated by the World Economic Forum to cost about 5 per cent of global GDP or $2.6 trillion dollars. Explanations of corruption, like explanations of crime, tend to focus on the individuals who commit corruption and the wider conditions which give rise to corrupt behaviour. Approaches designed to reduce corruption usually propose stiffer sanctions, institutional reforms and the passing of new laws. The purpose of this paper is to outline a complementary perspective with which to consider corruption.Design/methodology/approachGrounded in situational crime prevention and related criminological theory, the paper argues that opportunities in the immediate environment play a causal role in generating corruption. It proposes that corruption can be minimised by removing or reducing opportunities which are conducive to corrupt behaviour. In total, five cases are chosen as illustrative examples of how situational crime prevention ...
